Civil group urges new Cabinet to oversee polls

BEIRUT: The Civil Center for National Initiative, a local think tank, sent a letter to caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati Monday stressing the need to form a government as soon possible so that parliamentary elections could be held.

In the letter, the group asked for the quick formation of a government to oversee the elections, called on the electoral bodies to undertake parliamentary elections, sought the election of a new president and urged the creation of a “government able to be as strong as the Constitution and support the people.”

The think tank, whose founding members include Mikati himself and the journalist Ghassan Tueni, aims to promote the role of civil society in Lebanese politics and establish a civil and non-confessional state.
