Casualties after Lebanon police, wanted man exchange fire

BEIRUT: Judicial police Wednesday arrested a wanted Lebanese criminal in Baalbek, east Lebanon, following an exchange of gunfire that left a Syrian man dead and at least three police officers wounded, security sources said.

They said that Mohammad Hasan Shamas, and a Syrian man who was in his company, traded fire with the police unit from Baalbek’s judicial branch that raided Shamas’ house in Boudai on the outskirts of Baalbek.

The Syrian, identified as Ahmad Khaled al-Idawi, was killed instantly, the sources told The Daily Star.

They said Col. Fadi Hallani and two other policemen were wounded in the 5 a.m. raid.

Shamas was taken into custody.
