Muslim scholars denounce killings

BEIRUT: The Committee of Muslim Scholars is opposed to any ideology that favors the killing of innocent people, the body’s head said Wednesday, commenting on the recent wave of bombings that have rocked Lebanon.

“The Committee of Muslim Scholars does not sponsor and cannot accept such an ideology whose victims are innocent people,” Sheikh Malik Jadidah said.

Three suicide bombings, which killed two people and wounded scores others in the past two weeks, are believed to have been planned by radical Islamist groups. Speaking after meeting Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk at the Interior Ministry, Jadidah said that he also raised with the minister his concerns that there were “flaws” to the security plan launched in Tripoli in April.

“We talked about some raids carried out and the fact that some people are being tortured when arrested,” Jadidah said. “The meeting was very positive, and the minister has promised to follow up on these issues so that the security plan will be put back on the right track.”
