BEIRUT: Amal MP Hani Qobeisi announced Monday that he had withdrawn his defamation and slander lawsuit against the head of the Banks Association, Francois Bassil.
“After listening to what Mr. Francois Bassil said in Jbeil, and after he showed respect to the Parliament and the fellow MPs ... I have retreated from the case I had filed against him,” Qobeisi said in a statement reported by the National News Agency.
Bassil defended himself Sunday against the accusations of slander and defamation, saying he had not targeted any specific MP in his comments and was rather addressing corrupt politicians.
“What I said did not concern the Parliament or any MP in specific,” Bassil said at a gathering in his hometown in Jbeil. “I rather meant to address politicians that prioritize their private interests over that of the country.”
“Everyone shall respect the constitutional institutions,” he added, sending greetings to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
