BEIRUT: Police said Sunday that a suspect who was held at a detention center in the northern city of Tripoli has died in custody from a suspected drugs overdose.

The suspect, who was identified only by his initials, was apprehended on charges of armed robbery and illegal use of weapons.

A statement by the Internal Security Forces, said he was being interrogated at Tripoli’s Abou Samra police station at noon Saturday when he suddenly felt very ill and was transported urgently to hospital.

He died shortly after from a drugs overdose, the statement said.

“Another detainee who shared the same cell with the deceased, testified that he told him that he had swallowed the whole contents of a bottle of ‘Benzhexol’ which he was carrying at the time of his arrest, so that he would not be charged with drug trafficking,” the statement added.

Two forensic doctors were tasked with examining the body, as well as blood and urine samples to carry out the necessary tests to determine the cause of death.

The statement stated that “no violence or traces of torture were found on the body.”
