BEIRUT: Lebanese Internal Security Forces arrested and detained a dangerous wanted criminal Friday, after an armed group attempted to hinder the arrest by opening fire at police forces in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The ISF’s police unit in Beirut’s southern suburbs received information pertaining to the whereabouts of the wanted suspect, who was found near a shop on Beirut's airport road.
The perpetrator, aged 29, had been issued with over twenty three summary judgments and is wanted for judicial and close contact crimes including; kidnapping, drug dealing, theft, multiple counts of attempted murder, gunfire, and beating and wounding security forces.
After surveillance work the ISF closed in on the suspect at the local shop near Beirut’s airport road.
He then opened fire at security forces in order to evade arrest.
Shortly after, an armed group of anonymous men also opened fire at the security forces who were attempting to arrest the wanted man.
Members of the ISF responded by shooting in the air, without incurring any damages.
After successfully completing the arrest, seizing the detained criminal’s weapon and withdrawing from the area, the ISF were still under fire from the armed group, who continued their assault in an attempt to free the suspect.
Police forces however, succeeded in transporting the wanted man to the local unit in the southern suburbs.
Efforts to seize the involved anonymous group are still under way, with investigations being held by the relevant judicial authorities.
