BEIRUT: Representatives of the committee heading the elite Palestinian security force toured the Ain al-Hilweh camp’s markets Saturday to check up on the deployed officers and the stability in the camp.
Four Palestinian officials surveyed the camp’s streets and commercial markets a week before the arrival of the Eid al-Fitr, which is celebrated at the end of Ramadan and sees Muslims typically buy new clothes and prepare large ceremonies.
The convoy included Hamas’ political relations officer Ahmad Abelhadi, Secretary of the Popular Committees in Ain al-Hilweh camp Abou Bassam Makdah and the representative of the Islamic factions Khalid As-Saadi, the National News Agency reported.
Abdelhadi said that the move is to ensure that the camp is safe for all residents and especially women, and “complement[s] the efforts of the merchants” in this aim.
He expressed that the residents’ response was widely positive and that many actors were contributing to the success of the security plan in the camp.
The three representatives were joined by the head of the Palestinian Scholars Committee Sheikh Bassam Kayed.
“Safe-guarding the camps' security and especially Ain al-Hilweh camp is a national responsibility and we should all collaborate to protect our camps,” Kayed said .
