UNIFIL commander hears assurances of calm

NAQOURA, Lebanon: The departing UNIFIL commander said Wednesday that he had received assurances from the Lebanese and Israeli militaries that they wanted to maintain calm on their common border after salvos of rockets were fired from south Lebanon into Israel in solidarity with events in Gaza.

“I have received assurances from the parties that they want to continue working closely with UNIFIL to maintain calm in the area,” Maj. Gen. Paolo Serra said, following a meeting with senior officers from the Israeli and Lebanese armies at the Ras al-Naqoura crossing.

Maj. Gen. Luciano Portolano, who is due to assume command of UNIFIL on 24 July, also attended the meeting.
