BEIRUT: Government institutions, public departments and municipalities will remain closed until Wednesday after Prime Minister Tammam Salam extended the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The decision was made after the Higher Islamic Council announced Tuesday as the first day of Eid al-Fitr for Shiites.

The Sunni Dar al-Fatwa and the office of late Shiite Preacher Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah announced that Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, fell Monday.
