BEIRUT: American University of Beirut’s Board of Trustees announced the resignation of President Peter Dorman Friday.
The resignation will be effective as soon as a suitable replacement is available, according to a statement released by the university’s Executive Office, which said the board anticipated the search would conclude by 2015.
Director of News and Information at AUB Maha Al-Azar told The Daily Star that Dorman had “expressed his desire to return to academia,” clarifying that the outgoing president would return to Beirut as a professor of history and archeology in AUB’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences after a year sabbatical in the U.S.
According to Azar, Dorman’s early resignation is meant to provide ample time for the trustees to find a successor, especially since in the middle of next year AUB will start preparations for a large multi-year fundraising campaign set to launch in 2016.
“The new leader must join in the beginning of the campaign and lead it,” Azar said, stressing the importance of having the new president preside over preparations before the campaign is launched.
Board of Trustees Chair Philip Khoury will appoint a search committee to identify Dorman’s successor, the statement said. Azar said that the committee would be formed soon, adding that the university would hire a private company to assist in the executive search.
