BEIRUT: Health Minister Wael Abu Faour said a deal over the presidential election was not ready yet and that he was downbeat over any upcoming solutions.
“The door for political compromise in the presidency issue is not open yet,” the minister said during a meeting with mayors in Rashaya. “There is no progress over the presidency issue until now, and there don’t seem to be any solutions on the horizon that could put an end to the presidential void."
Abu Faour blamed the political forces for the presidential stalemate, saying “they are exchanging impractical conditions and counter-conditions” that make the election of a new head of state impossible.
“The political forces should not blame any foreign side [for the presidential election failure] because the crisis is internal and Lebanese and the decision is a domestic one,” he said.
The minister called to put an end to such political bickering and urged all parliamentary blocs to go to Parliament and vote for a president.
Parliament is set to convene Monday to elect a new president. However, the session is likely to fail in the absence of a consensus among political rivals.
