BEIRUT: Lebanese authorities will hand over Friday former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s senior aide, who has been in detention here over alleged links to the mafia.

A high-ranking judicial source told The Daily Star that the handover would take place after midday at Beirut airport.

The source said Lebanon sent a letter to the Italian authorities requesting them to dispatch a delegation to receive Marcello Dell’Utri, who has been in Lebanese custody since his arrest nearly two months ago.

Lebanon's prosecutor’s office received a response from Italy Thursday confirming that a security delegation would arrive in Beirut Friday to receive Dell’Utri.

Dell'Utri, 72, was apprehended April 11 on charges of mafia connections after he fled to Beirut to escape trial in Italy.
