BEIRUT: “She was wearing nothing but white cotton underwear and a tampon,” said a witness, after a naked woman was spotted walking the lengths of the Charles Helou highway at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Voice of Lebanon announced heavy traffic on Charles Helou as cars came to a halt over the peculiar sight.

Hasan, a local tire shop employee, told The Daily Star that two patrolling police cars spotted the woman and called on him to grab a hold of her.

“I got her a blanket from the store and then she went with the police,” Hasan said, adding that the woman was around 35 years old, black haired and slim figured.

Hasan also stated that the woman did not seem fully conscious of her surroundings, she had “black circles under her eyes and seemed disoriented.”

He opinioned that the woman “was probably on some kind of drug or medication,” adding that such incidences were not uncommon in the popular night time destination Mar Mikhael, which lies parallel to the highway.

Abu Khalil, an employee at Electricite du Liban, also spotted the woman and told The Daily Star that “this is not the first time something like this has happened.”

A gate keeper at the state owned electricity company, Abu Khalil recalled an incident that took place last year when a tall white man was also caught running naked on the Charles Helou highway, echoing Hassan's opinion that cause was “probably drugs.”

Security guards at MTC’s headquarters also saw the woman, saying she had walked from beside the telecoms company until she reached Hassan’s tire shop 6 minutes away.
