BEIRUT: Police arrested Tuesday a suspect in the death of the Syrian woman whose body was found half-naked in a bag at her apartment near Beirut Tuesday, a security source told The Daily Star.
The Internal Security Forces' Information Branch arrested Mohammed Nouri Hasan, 30, who was in frequent contact with the victim and who stopped visiting her apartment since the incident occured.
Amal Abdul-Karim Maaz, 57, was discovered by neighbors who suspected something was amiss after a strong smell began to emanate from her home in the Bambook Center on Mar Takla street in Sadd al-Boushrieh.
The medical examiner said that the victim had died approximately 10 days ago, and he ordered the transportation of the body to Rafik Hariri’s Governmental Hospital in Beirut, where it will be further examined.
Basic reports said that the absence of any blood in the apartment means that Maaz was suffocated.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the apparent murder.
