Police arrest suspect in death of Syrian woman

BEIRUT: Police Tuesday arrested a suspect in the death of a Syrian woman whose body was found half-naked in a bag at her apartment near Beirut, a security source told The Daily Star.

Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch arrested Mohammad Nouri Hassan, 30, who was in frequent contact with the victim.

Amal Abdel-Karim Maaz, 57, was discovered by neighbors who suspected something was amiss after a strong smell began to emanate from her home in the Bambook Center on Mar Taqla street in Sadd al-Boushrieh.

The medical examiner said the victim had died approximately 10 days ago, and he ordered that the transportation of the body to Rafik Hariri’s Governmental Hospital in Beirut, where it will be examined further.

Basic reports said the absence of any blood in the apartment meant Maaz had suffocated. Authorities have launched an investigation.
