BEIRUT: A regular tripartite meeting for senior officers from the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces took place at the UN headquarters Wednesday, to discuss security concerns and ground violations across the Blue Line.
The Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, Maj. Gen. Paolo Serra, presided over the meeting at the UN position at the Ras al-Naqoura crossing.
Security officials discussed relevant provisions of UN Security Council resolution 1701, including the situation along the Blue Line.
Participants tackled the issue of enhancing security, minimizing the scope for misunderstandings and preventing violations across sensitive locations along the dividing barrier.
The parties discussed the withdrawal of Israeli forces from northern Ghajar, reaffirming their commitment to the cessation of hostilities and to preserve stability along the Blue Line.
UNIFIL has acted as a liaison between the representatives and coordinated arrangements between the parties. The UN body has been the prime mechanism for minimizing conflict during critical phases in the Lebanese-Israeli relationship, especially in border regions separating the countries. ?
