TRIPOLI, Lebanon: An anonymous group threw a hand grenade at the car of Beddawi Mayor Hasan Ghomrawi at 5 a.m. Saturday, according to a security source.
The hand grenade was accompanied by gunshots fired at the mayor’s 4WD vehicle and at least three cars were damaged in the process. The mayor's car was parked in front of his house.
Ghomrawi said he considered the attack to be an “assassination attempt,” adding that its main purpose was to disrupt the security plan.
The mayor called on judicial authorities to prosecute the perpetrators, pointing out that the "incident is tied to Tripoli’s security breakdown."
Security forces deployed to the scene shortly after the incident took place. They inspected Ghomrawi’s vehicle and the other damaged cars in an attempt to uncover the identities of the perpetrators.
