BEIRUT: Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri sought to reassure Saudi tourists that they should be fine in Lebanon despite a security flare-up tied to the violence in Iraq.

“The condition of Saudi tourists in Lebanon is fine and reassuring,” Asisi said in remarks published Wednesday by the Saudi daily Okaz.

Saudi tourists in Lebanon “are not a target,” he said, while pointing out that the Saudi Embassy in Beirut was working “round the clock to provide immediate assistance.”

Asiri, nevertheless, called on Saudi tourists to exercise caution.

He lauded the stepped-up security measures taken by the Lebanese Interior Ministry at the start of the tourist season, pointing to increased police patrols throughout Beirut and elsewhere in Lebanon.

Lebanon has been jolted by two deadly suicide car bombings since Friday.

A suicide bomber killed a security officer and wounded 25 people in a midnight attack Monday in the Beirut neighborhood of Tayyouneh, intending to carry out the bombing in the capital’s southern suburbs.

A similar attack took place Friday when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a police checkpoint on the Beirut-Damascus highway in Dahr al-Baidar, killing a police officer and wounding 32 people.
