BEIRUT: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri congratulated Wednesday Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab on the formation of a new government.

Hariri “wished him success in his duties for the best interest and prosperity of the Egyptian people,” according to a statement issued by the former premier’s office.

Mahlab was named prime minister late February following the surprise resignation of former Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi's government.

On Saturday, the new prime minister unveiled a new 31-member cabinet that retained Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as defense minister.

Mahlab is a civil engineer who formerly headed of one of Egypt's biggest construction firms. He was also an official in deposed President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party.
