March 14 groups bring universities to standstill

BEIRUT: March 14 youth organizations organized a number of sit-ins in support of the presidency Monday across universities in Lebanon, from Ashrafieh to Sidon.

The events ranged from holding a 10-minute sit-in to boycotting classes for a day.

“Anyone who thinks they can destabilize the position of the first presidency is mistaken since that position has returned to its rightful place after the withdrawal of the Syrian army and the departure of the occupier from the Baabda Palace,” the students said in a statement.

The move by the student groups comes in retaliation for the campaign against the president led by pro-March 8 media outlets, especially two articles written by Ibrahim al-Amine, editor-in-chief of Al-Akhbar newspaper.

The March 14 secretariat also reiterated its continued support for the president, condemning the targeting of the presidency by “yellow journalism and hired pens.”
