BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman launched the administrative decentralization bill Tuesday, legislation that he said would encourage various sectors to uphold consumers’ basic rights and promote social justice.
“Decentralization is a huge privilege that encourages sectors and emphasizes respecting investors’ basic rights,” he said during a ceremony at Baabda Palace, adding that it should also reduce exploitation and decrease cases of injustice.
Administrative decentralization, which was called for in the 1989 Taif Accord, seeks to redistribute authority, responsibility and financial resources for providing public services among different levels of government.
