Fatah killing an ‘attack on Palestinian moderates’

BEIRUT: The assassination of a Fatah Movement official in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh was carried out by “agents” and was intended as an attack on Palestinian moderates, the Central News Agency said Tuesday, quoting Fatah sources.

Masked gunmen shot and killed Col. Jamil Zaydan as he walked toward his house in Ain al-Hilweh Monday.

Zaydan recently became a member of Ain al-Hilweh’s joint security committee. Zaydan’s death is the seventh recent assassination of a Palestinian official, most of whom have been from Fatah, the news agency said.

“Those who stand behind the assassinations … have foreign agendas that have nothing to do with the Palestinian people and their cause,” the agency quoted a Fatah source as saying.
