Bassil calls Turkey, Qatar for help in kidnap cases

BEIRUT: Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil has asked Turkey to help locate and secure the safe release of two kidnapped Syrian bishops and the missing Lebanese photojournalist Samir Kassab.

Bassil made the request while receiving Turkish Ambassador to Lebanon Inan Ozildiz at the ministry’s offices in Bustros Palace, Ashrafieh.

Bassil asked Ozildiz to relay his request to his Turkish counterpart. He also telephoned his Qatari counterpart, Hamad Ben Jasem al-Atiya, and asked him to help with the issue.

In October, Lebanese cameraman Kassab and a Mauritanian reporter who work for Abu Dhabi-based Sky News Arabia disappeared in Syria.

Aleppo’s Greek Orthodox Archbishop Paul Yazigi and Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim were abducted in April 2013 by gunmen while en route to the northern Syrian city from the Turkish border.
