BEIRUT: Hundreds rallied outside Fatah’s headquarters in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp Sunday, showing their support of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of key talks with the White House, where he is set to stress the right of return and the need to form an independent Palestinian state.
The protest was organized by Fatah and the Palestine Liberation Organization and was attended by residents as well as members of Fatah’s military factions bearing arms.
The rally comes as Fatah is experiencing an internal rift between supporters of Abbas and a former Fatah leader in Gaza, Mohammad Dahlan, who is accused of corruption.
Abbas will meet U.S. President Barack Obama Monday to discuss the crisis in peace talks with Israel ahead of a looming April deadline.
