Joreige: Government’s priority fighting terror

BEIRUT: Information Minister Ramzi Joreige said Friday the main task of the newly formed Cabinet was to fight terrorism and ensure responsible media coverage and the application of media laws.

“The government’s primary task is to fight terrorism. Among its priorities is also to ensure media security not through repression, but through the implementation of laws and a gentleman’s agreement,” Joreige told a delegation from the League of Faculty of Media and Documentation Graduates at the state-run Lebanese University.

Following complaints about inflammatory coverage by some media outlets of the security situation in Lebanon, representatives from some of the 34 media organizations, including The Daily Star, last year signed an agreement, the Journalist’s Pact for Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon, to promote peace through responsible reporting.
