BEIRUT: Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk emphasized Sunday that the March 14 coalition would only support a candidate from among its group to run in the upcoming presidential election.
Rapprochement between the Future Movement and the Free Patriotic Movement, notably, a meeting between Future Movement leader Saad Hariri and FPM leader Michel Aoun in Paris last month, hinted that Aoun could be rallying support ahead of the presidential election.
“As part of a political party and as part of the Cabinet, we will do all that is in our capacity to hold the presidential election on time,” Machnouk said in an interview with Al-Arabiya.
“There is no decision yet to nominate anyone for the presidential election, neither within March 14 or the Future Movement.
For this decision to be made, the candidate should be part of March 14 and not from outside this camp.”
However, he added, “this doesn’t mean that contacts and discussions with Aoun should not continue.”
