BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri Monday formed a committee of lawmakers from his parliamentary bloc to hold consultations with various political factions over the upcoming presidential election.
In comments to a local newspaper published Monday, Berri said that the committee would work in parallel with his own efforts to ensure the presidential election is held on time.
“The committee will work in parallel with contacts and consultations that I will have with relevant sides in order to secure the right conditions to hold the [parliamentary] session to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline,” the speaker told As-Safir daily.
Berri said the committee made up of members from his Development and Liberation parliamentary bloc would hold consultations with rival political groups over the presidential election which is due this spring.
The committee members are MPs Ali Oseiran, Yassine Jaber and Michel Moussa.
President Michel Sleiman's six-year term ends in May but the two-month constitutional deadline for Parliament to meet and elect a new head of state starts Tuesday, March 25.
