Rifi orders investigation into airport prison claims

BEIRUT: Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi Wednesday asked the general prosecutor to investigate allegations of illegal arrests and other actions at Rafik Hariri International Airport after reports surfaced in Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq al-Awsat.

He asked the prosecutor to take the necessary measures, the National News Agency reported.

In an article published in the Saudi newspaper Wednesday, opinion writer Hussein Shabakshi alleged that Hezbollah maintained a prison two stories below the ground at the airport in which its members detained, interrogated and tortured people.

In his article, Shabaksh relayed the story of a woman who lives in Jeddah. According to her, she was held for three days in the underground prison and interrogated by people who introduced themselves as Hezbollah’s special security.
