BEIRUT: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri has informed Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun that he is not running for the post of prime minister, rejecting the idea that any deal would be struck on those terms, a Future lawmaker said Saturday.

“Hariri informed Aoun in their latest meeting that he is not a candidate for the premiership, and that this issue is not part of the [political] bazaar,” MP Ammar Houry told a local radio station.

Houri said that if Hariri possesses the requirements for the post if he were to throw his name in the ring for prime minister.

“There is no need to discuss his candidacy in [the context of] a bazaar or a deal,” he said.

Media reports emerged about a deal that would see Aoun as a consensus president in return for Hariri becoming prime minister. Hariri recently held a five-hour meeting with Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil to discussing the presidential election.

Houri said that Hariri is in contact with all parties as a policy of openness adopted by his group.

“We have always been calling for dialogue [among political rivals],” Houri said.
