BEIRUT: Seven inmates were wounded in overnight clashes in Roumieh prison over a decision to move some of the prisoners to other cells, security sources told The Daily Star, adding that riot was contained by Saturday morning.
The inmates burned a mattress and attacked wardens in Bloc B of Lebanon’s largest facility, clashing with police for several hours.
The prisoners attempted to break the door of their jail cells, which prompted police to open fire in the air.
The sources said that the inmates' wounds were light and there was no need to transport them to a hospital.
Riots are frequent in Roumieh, with prisoners sometimes demanding an end to worsening prison conditions, general amnesty and speed in legal procedures.
