BEIRUT: U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly stressed during a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri on the need to hold the presidential election on time.

“I expressed appreciation for the Speaker’s efforts, and recalled the statement agreed at the meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon... which emphasized the crucial importance for confidence and stability in Lebanon of the presidential and parliamentary elections being conducted on time on the basis of Lebanon’s constitutional procedures and democratic practice,” Plumbly said.

Plumbly said that the presidential election, slated for May 25, “should remain free of foreign interference.”

He added that “Lebanon’s friends in the international community have a keen interest in the successful completion of the process, on time and in accordance with constitutional practice.”

“We earnestly hope that members of parliament will engage fully in the coming days to secure the election of a president by the date set in law,” Plumbly said.

Lebanon failed in three consecutive rounds to elect a new head of state, with another Parliament session scheduled later this week to vote for a president.
