BEIRUT: Beirut Investigative Judge Ghassan Oweidat Tuesday indicted Ibrahim Bashir, the former head of the Higher Relief Committee, on charges of embezzling funds allocated for the Sept. 2013 victims of the Indonesian boat accident.

In his indictment, Oweidat requested a 15-year prison term with hard labor for Bashir.

The retired brigadier general was referred to the Beirut criminal court for trial.

Bashir was arrested late last year on allegations that he had transferred $10 million from the HRC’s account to his personal account outside Lebanon.

His wife was arrested soon afterward on the same charges.

Bashir has denied the allegations, accusing Suheil Bouji, the secretary-general of the Cabinet of then-caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, of framing him in the case.
