BEIRUT: Lebanon launched a comprehensive plan to improve safety at companies dealing in gas canisters, Industry Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan said Thursday.

The plan, prepared by the minister, is aimed at ensuring gas companies in Lebanon meet all legal requirements and international safety standards.

Hajj Hasan’s comments came as he and Energy Minister Arthur Nazarian toured one of Lebanon’s major gas companies in Dora, north of Beirut. The ministers were also accompanied by experts from the ministry to inspect whether the company was abiding by safety regulations.

Hajj Hasan said that the plan included inspections for all of the more than 80 gas firms in country.

He also urged the unlicensed companies to apply for the needed documents to legitimize their operations.
