BEIRUT: A live hand grenade was discovered overnight at the side of a road in the northern city of Tripoli, security sources said Wednesday.

The sources told The Daily Star that the grenade was found around midnight, near residential buildings, in the Tripoli neighborhood of Mina.

A military bomb squad was called to the scene and the grenade was taken to barracks for investigation, the sources added.

They said investigators have begun their search for the perpetrator by reviewing footage recorded by security cameras in the area.

The sources said the grenade was likely not intended to target a specific person.
