BEIRUT: Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst Thursday renewed the EU’s support to Lebanon and its institutions, adding that Europe will stand by Lebanon during what she said were “challenging times.”
"The EU will continue to support the national institutions and reiterates its commitment to a deep and strong partnership with Lebanon, to help the country move forward in these challenging times," Eichhorst told reporters following talks with departing President Michel Sleiman.
Thursday’s presidential election session failed once again over lack of quorum, further increasing the chances of the country plunging into a presidential vacuum.
Eichhorst said she visited Sleiman on the occasion of the completion of his mandate and praised his efforts “to keep the country stable and secure, and to enhance the EU-Lebanon partnership in all areas."
"The European Union has continuously expressed support for the initiatives launched under the leadership of President Sleiman which led to the adoption of the Baabda Declaration and the disassociation policy of Lebanon from regional crises, the pursuit of National Dialogue and the discussions on a national defense strategy,” she added.
Sleiman’s term ends on May 25.
