BEIRUT: French Ambassador to Lebanon Patrice Paoli Friday urged Lebanese lawmakers to elect a new president within the framework of the constitutional rules.

“We believe the Lebanese have the ability and Lebanese lawmakers have the option to bring about a new president within the constitutional rules,” Paoli told reporters in south Lebanon.

“This is France’s position,” he stressed. “We are waiting for the next parliamentary sessions; perhaps a president will be elected to prevent a vacuum."

His remarks came during a visit to Tibnin at the invitation of the village’s major, Nabil Fawwaz.

Paoli was accompanied by a delegation from the French Embassy.

He said the French Embassy and Tibnin Municipality had partnership agreements, particularly cultural.

“We seek to develop this partnership and this cooperation," Paoli said.
