BEIRUT: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri Friday congratulated Egypt’s President-elect Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on his landslide victory. “Choosing you as president for Egypt is a blessed step toward the restoration of Egypt’s leading role in the region and the Arab world,” Hariri said in a cable.
He said the Lebanese shared the Egyptian people’s joy of moving to a “promising phase of stability, progress and social justice.”
Hariri wished Sisi success in his new role, acknowledging the vast challenges facing Egypt. Hariri and a delegation from the Future Movement held talks with Sisi in Cairo in February. Prior to his election to the presidency, Sisi served as Egypt’s defense minister.
He came to power almost one year after the Egyptian Army toppled former Islamist President Mohammad Morsi.
