Four serious plots to assassinate General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim have failed in the past two years, sources have revealed to The Daily Star.Sources have disclosed information for the first time about four failed attempts to assassinate Ibrahim, adding that security forces were not only able to thwart these plots but were also able to arrest a number of those involved in the clandestine security war.To this end, the groups are believed to have identified three main Shiite targets: Hezbollah, Amal Movement leader Nabih Berri and Ibrahim. The interrogation of Abbas uncovered a level of coordination between Abbas and Zuraiqat, although their aims were not the same.Heavy secrecy surrounded details of the attack at the time, after a security breach was discovered that had enabled the details of Ibrahim's movements to be revealed. The third attempt, which sources described as the one that came the closest to succeeding, was uncovered just before the death of Ibrahim's mother in July.
