Sidon's mayor was forced to apologize this week for the municipality's failure to open a hospital paid for by Turkey that would have provided much-needed emergency and trauma care. The land was donated by the municipality, while TIKA not only paid for the construction, but also supplied the latest medical technology and equipment, which sits unused in the empty hospital.Saudi offered his apologies to Erdogan, now the president of Turkey, blaming a projected funding shortfall following a report by the American University of Beirut predicting a deficit of $32 million in the hospital's first five years of operation.Medical sources in Sidon pointed out that a different study had been provided to the municipality explaining the most efficient and economical way to run the hospital under the supervision of the Health Ministry, which opened the Shebaa Government Hospital.
