BEIRUT: A man was killed Tuesday in a village near Zahle when a diesel tank he was repairing exploded, the National News Agency reported.

The explosion in Bar Elias killed Moustafa Hebri and wounded two others, including Ahmad Abdel Wareth, a firefighter called out to tackle the blazes caused by the blast.

Incidents like the above occur when the gas inside the reservoir catches alight, creating a huge pressure that explodes the metallic container.

According to the NNA, the man was in the process of welding the tank when the explosion occurred.

While the tank was presumably empty of diesel when the welding began, checks should have been made to ensure the tank was free from all remaining gas, an expert told The Daily Star.
