Halabi studies stars that are between one and 12 times the mass of the Sun, a range that spans multitudes of stars around the universe whose lifespan extends from millions of years up to several billion.During their lifetimes, these stars produce elements that contribute to the chemical signature of the universe. Most of the stars Halabi studies don't explode, although some might. Halabi studies the formation of these elements, but is also working to better understand the physics behind these reactions and the dynamics of a star's evolution.Eventually, the star will run out of hydrogen, contract, and then begin fusing the helium that was formed in its core.All of this mixing changes the surface composition of the stars, creating and bringing new elements onto its surface, Halabi says.
