Effective Lebanese border management will remain a pipedream of security officials so long as the war in Syria rages on, a member of Lebanon's Border Control Committee told The Daily Star, saying erecting more official crossings might abate the threat of terrorism but could not be achieved unilaterally.Today, Lebanon is managing its borders through just two official crossings, Masnaa, in the Bekaa Valley and Arida, to the north. In 2014, the EU donated 1 million euros to supply border centers with new equipment, including an examination laboratory to detect false travel documents.Dasuky said, even with this aid, effectively managing the borders without coordination with Syria would be too costly for Lebanon bear.Lebanon's border with Syria stretches 370 kilometers and covers rough terrain that cannot be monitored through human efforts alone, Dasuky explained. The security situation along the borders is intimately linked to the military dynamics on the ground in Syria.Apart from Syria, Dasuky said the presence of Palestinian military camps, run by the pro-Syrian faction, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, straddling the borders posed another challenge for monitoring and management.
