At least 13 Syrian militants were killed Tuesday during intense clashes with Hezbollah in the Qalamoun town of Zabadani, a security source told The Daily Star. The clashes, which pitted Hezbollah and its Syrian army allies against Syrian rebel factions, were the "fiercest yet" in the monthlong battle for the town, located just 8 kilometers from Lebanon's eastern border, according to the security source. The capture of the town of Zabadani would add to Hezbollah's major field victories, which saw the party take 64 percent of the Qalamoun hills since their offensive, backed by the Syrian army, began in the region last May.
