Baton-wielding police attacked dozens of demonstrators who had gathered in Downtown Beirut to protest the trash crisis after a standoff that lasted several hours Wednesday.Television footage showed at least one protester being carried away on a stretcher by medics after police used force to disperse their demonstration, which coincided with a ministerial meeting to discuss the garbage crisis. For the next hour, police fired water cannons at the protesters, urging them to disperse.A police commander later arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protesters, but soon walked away after getting shouted down by the angry crowd. The protesters tried to kick and push back, but were overpowered by police and scattered along the street.
