You Stink activists rejected the result of the bidding process to treat Lebanon's waste describing it as "null" during a news conference Monday, while issuing more demands for the government. Marwan Maalouf, You Stink's spokesperson, described the government as "completely illegitimate," during the news conference, and decried the violent response of police toward protesters over the weekend. What began as a peaceful protest, unprecedented in Lebanon for its lack of sectarianism or party affiliation, soon escalated into violent clashes following a brutal crackdown by riot police over the weekend. Maalouf called on Lebanese citizens across the country to join Saturday's demonstration, or to hold protests in their respective localities if unable to come to the capital. Some, such as Interior Minister Machnouk, have alleged that the rioters were instructed by political parties to deliberately infiltrate the protest with the aim of compromising the demonstration and violently engaging with the security forces.
