Prime Minister Tammam Salam Tuesday vowed to keep the government functioning despite its de facto state of paralysis, expressing hope for an end to the nearly 19-month-long presidential void.I hope that talks [aimed at ending the vacuum] will not stop and that we achieve an accomplishment in order to restore the trust of the Lebanese who have had enough," Salam said at a conference on the food safety campaign at the Grand Serail.He called on rivals to rise above obstacles by cooperating, vowing not to back down on the demand to elect a new head of state. Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb said Monday that the ministerial committee overseeing the country's trash crisis will hold a final meeting in the upcoming days to set a Cabinet session to approve a plan to export garbage as ministers are discussing means to fund the settlement.Salam hailed Health Minister Wael Abu Faour, describing him as a "fighter". The Health Ministry launched in November 2014 a campaign to combat health violations that pose risks to citizens, after several institutions were proven to be violating safety standards.
