BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai has urged Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun not to vent his fury at the government for refusing to address the issue of military and security appointments, local newspaper An-Nahar said Monday.
The short report said Rai’s call came during a telephone call with Aoun late Sunday.
“Nevermind the streets,” Rai reportedly told Aoun.
Aoun has said his party has begun preparations for street protests in Mount Lebanon and north Lebanon.
“The Christians in the Levant are being eliminated by the sword, and some want to eliminate us in politics,” Aoun told supporters from south Lebanon at his Rabieh residence Saturday.
His planned action comes after the Cabinet, in its first session last Thursday in nearly a month, passed a decree, ignoring the issue of military and security appointments.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam has scheduled a Cabinet session for July 9 despite the conflict that erupted with the FPM’s ministers after the government approved the allocation of $21 million to help export agricultural and industrial products by sea after the Nasib crossing on the Jordan-Syria border closed.
