The Army's strongest weapon is its unity in the face of ongoing political disputes, Prime Minister Tammam Salam said from the Defense Ministry in Yarze Thursday, following a meeting with Defense Minister Samir Moqbel and Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi. The Free Patriotic Movement has strongly opposed extending the terms of the current security chiefs, demanding the Cabinet appoint a new ISF head and Army commander. As for the volatile situation along Lebanon's eastern border, Salam said that the Army has "clear and honest" support from all members of the Cabinet in its efforts to protect Lebanese territory from the threat of jihadi groups. He said that the support was proven last week after the Cabinet authorized the Lebanese Army to take "appropriate decisions and measures" to protect the northeastern town of Arsal from jihadis based on the town's outskirts.
