As the security plan for Beirut's southern suburbs is being mulled, following implementation of similar initiatives in Tripoli and the northern Bekaa Valley, Palestinian factions are looking to increase security in camps across Lebanon. The Higher Palestinian Security Committee, which supervises the status of Palestinian camps in Lebanon, has begun preparations to deploy its own joint security force in the refugee camps of Burj al-Barajneh and Shatila, also located in Beirut's southern suburbs. Maj. Gen. Munir al-Maqdah, head of the joint Palestinian security forces in Lebanon, revealed that he had been given the green light from the Higher Committee to coordinate with the Lebanese authorities to replicate the Ain al-Hilweh model in other camps. The Mieh Mieh camp in Sidon will be the next target for the deployment of the elite security force, Maqdah said, followed by the camps in south Beirut, including Burj al-Barajneh and Shatila. There will also be joint liaison committees between the Palestinian and Lebanese authorities in areas where camps exist, Maqdah added.
