BEIRUT: Marada Movement leader Sleiman Frangieh Friday confirmed that he is the March 8 coalition’s logical candidate if MP Michel Aoun pulled out of the presidential race.

“March 8’s candidate today is Gen. Aoun,” Frangieh told a local television channel. “We won’t accept a centrist president without Gen. Aoun’s consent,” he warned, adding that he would only vote for Aoun.

Frangieh, however, believes he could become Lebanon’s president if the situation were to change.

“If Aoun withdraws from the presidential race, I would be March 8’s candidate.”

“We all wish to have a Lebanese president. But [wishful thinking] is one thing, and reality is another,” said Frangieh, who also suggested that a new political formula was in the offing.

“A [new] equation could emerge that will bring a president from March 8 and a prime minister from March 14,” he said.

Frangieh said “the one who reaches power has to be open to everyone,” stressing nevertheless that he has not offered himself as a presidential candidate.
